It is hard for Trump’s critics to find anything even approaching a foreign-policy plan when looking at the way Trump has handled relations thus far. Especially when they compare the Trump approach with that of Obama. Trump appears to have no particular philosophy, something seemingly evident this weekend.
However, a number of experts think that isn’t the whole truth. According to Thomas Wright, a Brookings Institution scholar, Trump believes the world is unfair to the U.S. in regards to the global economy, and he also has an abundance of sympathy for “authoritarian strongmen.”
A senior Trump administration official put is simply:
“No Friends, No Enemies. We have to explain to him that countries that have worked with us together in the past expect a level of loyalty from us, but he doesn’t believe that this should factor into the equation.”
Another member of his administration, a senior national-security official describes Trump’s stance as “permanent destabilization” as a way to keep allies and adversaries off-balance which Trump believes creates an “American advantage.”
A White House official with direct access to Trump says that he definitely has a doctrine:
“We’re America, Bitch.”
The official explained further:
“Obama apologized to everyone for everything. He felt bad about everything. Trump, on the other hand, doesn’t have any qualms. Trump doesn’t feel like he has to apologize for anything America does.”
However, the Trump “We’re America” doctrine is undermining the Western alliance and empowering Russia and China. The U.S. is helping in the demoralization of freedom with Trump’s policies, and they are actually making America weaker.
