Why white rural 'Christian' America does NOT deserve our attention

It's not the economy, stupid. It's the terrified white folks who think brown people are taking "their" jobs and country.

Stop wasting your time trying in vain to figure out white rural Christians in so called fly over America; they need to step up and do their own hard work and self examination. That’s the gist of an interesting and personal essay from a self confessed former member of America’s Trumpy strongholds.

“The real problem isn’t East Coast elites who don’t understand or care about rural America. The real problem is that rural Americans... don’t want to know why they feel the way they do or why they are struggling because they don’t want to admit it is in large part because of the choices they’ve made and the horrible things they’ve allowed themselves to believe,” says the enigmatic ‘Forsetti’s Justice.’

Yeah, this seems normal.

Religious fundamentalism, racism and news propaganda are impossible to penetrate by any of our caring or fact filled conversations, because “Everyone who isn’t just like them has been sold to them as a threat...When a child has an irrational fear, you can deal with it because they trust you and are open... When someone doesn’t trust you and isn’t open to anything not already accepted as true in their belief system, there really isn’t much, if anything, you can do.” The only hope for them is a personal experience, a kid coming out as gay, or maybe a health catastrophe, and even then the changes are incremental.

As a fellow traveler in the ‘grew up in fundamentalist Christian circles’ crowd, I assure you that the rest of this essay is well worth your time for a careful read. I hope it may allow us to finally close the book on a year and a half of hand wringing and fawning over people who don’t deserve such courtesy.
