UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has been scheduled to fight former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones on numerous occasions, however with that being said, the pair have only stepped into the Octagon together on one occasion.
With that being said, just nine months ago, Cormier and Jones were set to have a title unification fight in the main event of UFC 200 in July of 2016, however just 48 hours before the fight, Jones was pulled from the card for a failed out-of-competition drug test several weeks prior. Jones and his team made their defense, and the former champ was ultimately handed a one-year suspension retroactive to July.
Now, with UFC President Dana White recently stating that Jones would likely fight the winner of this weekend’s UFC 210 title fight between Cormier and top contender Anthony Johnson, Cormier has some words for the former champ.
Cormier responded to a comment made by Anthony Johnson, in which ‘Rumble’ stated that Jones will “always be around, regardless of what happened.”
That didn’t sit too well with DC, who fired back on 5ive Rounds:
“YOU KIND OF EXPECT IT, BUT THERE’S ONLY ONE PROBLEM WITH ANTHONY’S ANSWER,” CORMIER SAID. “I THINK WE’VE GOT TO STOP SAYING, ‘REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENED.’ WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE DID. SO WHEN WE SAY STUFF LIKE, ‘REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENED,’ OR WE DON’T STATE THE FACTS, IT’S ALMOST LIKE WE’RE SWEEPING IT UNDER THE RUG. WE KNOW WHAT HE DID. WE KNOW THE BAD THINGS THAT HE DID. WE KNOW THAT HE TRIED TO CHEAT. WE KNOW ALL THIS STUFF. SO I GET ANNOYED BECAUSE I’M LIKE, ‘WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME ABOUT A GUY THAT, THREE DAYS BEFORE WE WERE SUPPOSED TO FIGHT, PISSED HOT?’ THAT’S THE STUFF THAT ANNOYS ME, NOT THE FACT THAT HE’S A GOOD FIGHTER. HE’S A GREAT FIGHTER.”
“YOU CHEATED,” HE SAID. “YOU ALSO SMASHED INTO SOMEBODY’S CAR AND RAN AWAY. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID. IF EVERYBODY ELSE WANTS TO IGNORE IT, THEY CAN. I’M NOT.”
