Over the weekend, streaking heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis stepped onto the canvas with veritable MMA legend Mark Hunt. Lewis sought to extend his win-streak to a whopping seven-straight, and maybe, earn himself a shot at UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic.
Regrettably for Lewis and his fans, Hunt proved to be too much. As Lewis faded in the third and fourth rounds, Hunt turned up the offense, cracking the exhausted American repeatedly until the referee had no choice but to step in.
Shortly after this loss to Hunt, Lewis surprised the MMA community by announcing that the fight might have been his last ever, citing a lingering back injury as the problem.
In the immediate fallout of this fight, two of Lewis biggest rivals took to social media to comment on his loss, and his potential retirement.
One of these rivals was French heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou, who criticized Lewis’ performance and called him a baby:
The other was Travis Browne, who Lewis knocked out in a wild fight back in February.
“YOU SAY YOU HAVE THE MOST HEART IN THE HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION, BUT I JUST WATCHED YOU QUIT,” BROWNE SAID OF LEWIS ON INSTAGRAM. “YOU SHOULD RETIRE. YOU BROUGHT UP FALSE NEWS ABOUT ME THAT AFFECTED MY FAMILY. WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR MOM, NO WOMAN SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH. MISS LEWIS, YOU HAVE MY SYMPATHY. I HOPE YOUR FAMILY ISN’T AFFECTED BY FALSE ACCUSATIONS OR FALSE NEWS, LIKE MINE WAS. EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN’T HAVE THE SAME CONSIDERATION FOR MY FAMILY, I WISH THE BEST FOR YOUR WIFE AND CHILDREN. ENJOY YOUR WEDDING ON THE ISLANDS, MY HOME IS HEAVEN ON EARTH. BEST WISHES. WE KNOW YOU DON’T HAVE THE HEART, BUT IF YOU HAVE THE BALLS, I’M DOWN TO RUN IT BACK.”
Now, just a day removed from this trash talk from his rivals, Lewis has responded.
Do you think Derrick Lewis will actually retire?
