Thursday evening, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor once again found himself under fire for what many argued were racist remarks made during the third stop of he & Floyd Mayweather’s world tour promoting their August 26th fight.
On Tuesday, Conor McGregor told Mayweather to “dance for me boy” during the pair’s first press conference in Los Angeles. Following the event, many began to accuse McGregor of intending for the comments to be racist. With that being said, Floyd Mayweather Sr was quick to shut down the criticism as he stated that he didn’t take McGregor’s comments as racist.
Wednesday however, McGregor once again came under fire for making the same remark in Toronto, informing Mayweather to “dance for me boy”. This time however, the racist accusations became a bit more serious. Following the press conference an interview with McGregor aired on Jimmy Kimmel, where McGregor responded to a question of whether or not he would defeat Rocky Balboa in ‘Rocky III’ by saying:
“ROCKY III? I’M TRYING TO REMEMBER WHICH ONE WAS ROCKY III. WAS THAT THE ONE IN THE CELEBRITY GYM? I CAN’T REMEMBER IF THAT’S THE ONE WITH THE DANCING MONKEYS OR NOT.”
Things came to a head on Thursday in New York, when McGregor addressed the criticism on stage, denying that he meant any harm with the comments, before then informing those in attendance that he is half black, following the comment up with “from the belly button down”; before then making a comment regarding his love for black women, which included a sexual gesture.
Floyd Mayweather addressed McGregor’s antics at Thursday’s press conference during a media scrum, saying:
“HE TOTALLY DISRESPECTED MY DAUGHTER. HE DISRESPECTED THE MOTHER OF MY DAUGHTER. HE DISRESPECTED BLACK WOMEN, AND HE CALLED BLACK PEOPLE MONKEYS. WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS THIS. I’M PROUD TO BE A BLACK MAN, I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, AND I LOVE EVERYBODY. I HAVE A DIVERSE TEAM.”
“LIKE I SAID BEFORE, YOU CAN’T DO THAT. CONOR MCGREGOR YOU CANNOT DISRESPECT BLACK WOMEN. YOU CAN’T DISRESPECT BLACK PEOPLE PERIOD.”
Mayweather then went on to accuse McGregor of getting in the face of the mother of his child yesterday, but shied away from going into details on the situation, simply stating:
“LET ME SAY HE DISRESPECTED MY DAUGHTER, AND YESTERDAY HE GOT IN THE MOTHER OF MY DAUGHTER’S FACE.”
McGregor of course took a more serious approach to addressing the criticism at his media scrum, stating that his intention wasn’t to come across as racist.
