Over the weekend, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and “GGG” Gennady Golovkin finally stepped into the boxing ring together, battling to a controversial split draw. During the broadcast, which coincided with the UFC’s latest trip to Pittsburgh, UFC commentator Joe Rogan aired a special Fight Companion edition of his podcast, throughout which he and his compatriots had a spirited live discussion about the fights.
McGregor recently stepped into the boxing ring to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. Though the Irishman lost this fight, he did far better than anybody expected. This strong performance led Rogan to the belief that McGregor will box again – perhaps even against Mayweather.
“HE’S F**KING FLOYD MAYWEATHER,” SAID ROGAN OF MCGREGOR’S PERFORMANCE. “HE’S ONE OF IF NOT THE BEST BOXER EVER AND CONOR DID CATCH HIM WITH A COUPLE THINGS. . . THEY SHOULD [REMATCH]. WHY NOT? I THINK CONOR WOULD HAVE TO BEAT SOMEBODY GOOD IN A BOXING MATCH AND HE WOULD ALSO HAVE TO HAVE A REAL TRAINING CAMP.”
Rogan then discussed possible matchups between McGregor and Canelo and GGG, explaining that they could probably coax him back into the ring, but that it almost certainly wouldn’t go well for him.
“I DON’T THINK [CONOR IS DONE BOXING],” HE SAID. “LOOK, HE WENT THE VERY FIRST FIGHT AGAINST THE GREATEST EVER AND HE DIDN’T LOOK TOO BAD. IF THERE’S A LEGIT, BIG FIGHT – SAY IF CANELO ALVAREZ STEPS UP AND SAYS THAT HE WANTS TO FIGHT CONOR MCGREGOR, [CONOR] MIGHT DO IT.”
“IT WOULDN’T BE A SMART MOVE. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CANELO AND FLOYD – FLOYD WAS JUST A BRILLIANT BOXER. CANELO IS A MURDEROUS PUNCHER AND HE’LL F**K YOU UP. HE’LL HURT YOU.”
“[GOLOVKIN] IS NOT A GOOD FIGHT FOR HIM EITHER. NEITHER CANELO NOR GOLOVKIN IS A GOOD FIGHT FOR HIM. THEY’RE TERRIBLE FIGHTS FOR HIM. THOSE GUYS ARE DIFFERENT.”
