Earlier tonight devastating news broke that current UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson had suffered a knee injury and was forced out of his scheduled UFC 223 headliner with undefeated contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The shocking revelation marked the fourth time that the proposed Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov bout has failed to come to fruition.
It was not all bad news for fight fans however, as UFC President Dana White promptly announced that current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway was stepping in for the injured “El Cucuy” and will now face Khabib Nurmagomedov at next weekend’s UFC 223 event in Brooklyn for the promotions lightweight championship.
Whether or not Tony Ferguson has received that memo is questionable as “El Cucuy” issued the following emotional statement on social media where he expressed his desire “heal up and defend his title ASAP”.
According to a multiple reports, Tony Ferguson’s injury was caused by a “freak accident”.
“I’m told the injury to Tony Ferguson was literally caused by a trip. The freak accident of all freak accidents. He was walking, saw someone he wasn’t expecting to see, veered sharply to say hello and tripped.” – Brett Okamoto
