Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor exchanged plenty of trash talk in the buildup to their November 2016 lightweight title fight. Based on this trash talk alone, there would be plenty of reason to assume that the two fighters don’t like each other.
This, however, is not the case. In the wake of their fight, which McGregor won via second round knockout, the two fighters were quite respectful of one another. More recently, Alvarez suggested that McGregor, whose girlfriend recently gave birth to their first child, will be a great father.
Alvarez discussed McGregor’s fatherhood in a recent interview with TMZ. Watch Alvarez’s interview at the top of this article, and see a transcription of his comments on McGregor below:
“He’s doing quite well,” Alvarez said of the new father McGregor. “I think he’s going to do a good job. If he puts 10% of the effort into his child as he does fighting, I think he’s going to do damn good. So I wish him the best of luck.”
“It’s very terrifying, because you’re just not sure how you’re going to do,” Alvarez said of fatherhood. “There’s no real book for it. You’ve just got to kind of do it and hope you’re the right person to be a dad. I’ve been a champion, I’ve been a lot of things, but I have nothing better in my life than being a Dad. That’s my biggest success that I’ve had so far.”
Alvarez has not been seen in the cage since his title loss to McGregor, though that will change this weekend, when he takes on the dangerous Dustin Poirier on the undercard of a stacked UFC 211. McGregor has also not stepped into the cage since then. Unlike Alvarez, however, he does not seem likely to do so anytime soon.
