Today, Conor McGregor is the biggest star in mixed martial arts, and one of the biggest stars in sports outright. It is his status as such that helped him shoehorn his way into a boxing match with undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather Jr., which will go down on August 26 in Las Vegas and see both men pocket north of $100 million.
Long before McGregor was a sport-transcending mega star, however, he was just an up-and-coming kid from from Ireland. It was this up-and-comer that debuted in the UFC with a first-round TKO of Marcus Brimage back in 2013.
Shortly after winning this UFC debut, the young McGregor met UFC President Dana White for the very first time. And as luck would have it, cameras were rolling at the time of this meeting.
Watch McGregor’s first encounter with White, during which the pair discussed McGregor’s debut win and his future in the UFC, at the top of this article.
Though White and McGregor have had their issues in the past, their relationship seems to be quite good today, as White played a central role in the negotiations for the Irishman’s fight with Mayweather.
“NEGOTIATIONS WENT SMOOTH,” WHITE TOLD SPORTSCENTER SHORTLY AFTER THE FIGHT WAS MADE OFFICIAL. “FLOYD IS SURROUNDED BY SOME SMART PEOPLE AND WE GOT THIS THING DONE. THE IMPOSSIBLE DEAL IS NOW DONE.”
“I DON’T THINK ANYBODY IS BUMMED OUT ABOUT THIS DEAL,” THE UFC PRESIDENT ADDED CONTINUED. “THE NEGOTIATIONS WITH FLOYD WERE GREAT. EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTH WITH CONOR. IT WENT A LOT EASIER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD GO AND EVERYBODY IS WALKING AWAY FROM THIS THING HAPPY.”
How do you think Conor McGregor will do when he meets Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring?
