Award-Winning Hawkeye Sports Reporter John Bohnenkamp Joins Maven SI

Veteran journalist significantly increases Sports Illustrated’s Iowa sports coverage

Multiple award-winning sports journalist John Bohnenkamp adds his voice to Sports Illustrated with continual coverage of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Hawkeye Maven is part of digital media coalition Maven’s (ticker symbol MVEN) Sports Illustrated brand, where pro and college teams receive premium in-depth coverage in their own channels by recognized sports experts.

“I’m honored to be part of the revisioned Sports Illustrated with Maven,” Bohnenkamp said. “I’ve covered great stories at Iowa in my 31 years in sports journalism, and here I can boost the Hawkeyes’ visibility on an international stage. I’m looking forward to continuing to deliver quality coverage to Iowa fans around the state and around the world.”

Bohnenkamp’s seasoned career includes 28 years with The Hawk Eye newspaper in Burlington, Iowa, the oldest newspaper in Iowa. While there he covered high school sports before moving to college sports, and later became the sports editor. This year marks his 27th year covering Hawkeye sports.

Bohnenkamp’s multiple awards include the 2012 AP sports writer of the year for Iowa and 17 top 10 awards in the APSE national writing contest. He also received seven awards in the United States Basketball Writers Association contest, and his game story from Iowa’s win over Ohio State in 2017 took first place in the Football Writers Association of America writing contest.

Under Maven’s wing, Sports Illustrated will continue to develop and distribute the world-class stories and videos that readers expect from the brand, and is investing in great journalism by adding 200+ team-specific reporters in the field. Maven’s leadership team, which includes Sports Illustrated CEO Ross Levinsohn and Maven CEO James Heckman, has been in the online media and publishing business for nearly three decades. Their collective experience at NFL Exclusive, Rivals, Sportsline, HBO, 5to1, Scout, and Fox Sports set the stage for senior leadership roles at Yahoo!, News Corp, Tribune Co., and more.
