“It has become increasingly difficult for independent journalists to survive in today’s landscape of social media controls,” says founder Carlos Miller, a veterans journalist and author of The Citizen Journalist’s Photography Handbook. “Maven changes all of that. On Maven, PINAC is part of something bigger -- a coalition of credible, independent publishers. I’m looking forward to growing PINAC bigger and better than ever with the support of Maven.”
Since 2007, PINAC has encouraged citizens to participate in police accountability by photographing and recording misuse of power and by educating citizens on how to obtain public records. The channel features citizen-sourced stories, videos and photos of public-sector abuses of power.
The channel is accompanied by a strong social media following of nearly 270,000.
Maven CEO James Heckman said the addition of PINAC highlights two key facts about Maven. “First, our innovative publishing tools, audience engagement focus and advertising strength provide independent publishers a platform on which they can thrive in a world where that is becoming very difficult,” he said. “Second, Maven is bringing together experts, like Carlos, from all across the spectrum. We are now home to both PINAC and Blue Lives Matters. That illustrates the breadth of the coalition we’re building across our 30-plus content verticals.”
