March Madness: Score Points With These Durable REITs
laurenthomas95
March is one of my favorite months of the year because I get to watch my favorite college basketball teams "duke it out."
Oops, did I say Duke!
Yes, I’m a UNC fan and I purposely picked the Tar Heels to make it all the way to the Final Four – and of course, take the championship trophy back to Chapel Hill.
When you think about it, picking March Madness brackets is not much different than picking REITs (real estate investment trusts).
There are certainly Cinderella stores (like the USC Gamecocks) but success on the court and in a REIT portfolio boils down to fundamentals. The winners and losers are distinguished by their ability to successfully manage risk (playing solid offense and defense) and being disciplined through multiple cycles.
When the game buzzer sounds, the winner is usually the player who has demonstrated predictability in the face of adversity, and of course, put the most points on the board.
In my upcoming newsletter, Forbes Real Estate Investor, I plan to provide complete details of my REIT brackets including a list of around 100 companies. Each REIT will be scored based on a variety of metrics including dividend safety, financial structure, and management record.
