Maven Coalition News - June 14, 2019

A compendium of news and tips for all Mavens across the Maven coalition.

Maven Amplifies its Finance Vertical

Obviously the big news of the week was the acquisition of TheStreet by Maven.

Our strategy going into this year has been to focus on building out 3 strong vertical categories in Sports, Finance, and News/Politics, following a model that supports major household brands (flagships), niche vertical publishers, and expert writers + SEO to create a comprehensive pool of content that can be grown into a top-ranked destination for each vertical.

This move accelerates our ability to build out the leading finance channel. It gives us a strong brand that is widely respected by finance advertisers, and a great proof point for our dual revenue (ads + subscriptions) strategy.

How does this help you as a coalition member?

TST will add more users to the coalition, give us additional brand strength for our ad sales efforts, provide a strong hub for attracting and circulating finance readers, and accelerate our subscription revenue offerings. This will have an immediate impact on all of our finance publishers, but also on the larger coalition, as we circulate traffic (more on this below) and increase brand awareness with advertisers and agencies. As independent publishers make up the vast majority of our coalition traffic and audience, we are completely aligned with everyone's interest in seeing revenue grow across all properties.

Maven of the Week: BamaMaven

Maven’s sports network continues to grow - see here and here - powered by quality journalists. Christopher Walsh of BamaMaven won six awards during the 2019 Alabama Sports Writers Association Awards Banquet on Sunday night. Walsh won first place for best columns, best enterprise story, best basketball feature and best general sports feature.

Rollout of Distribution Widget Continues

As described in prior newsletters, we’ve been experimenting and gathering data from different techniques for distributing traffic around the coalition. That data has led us to significant improvements in click-through rates and user retention, so we’ve expanded the rollout across additional properties, including a version now appearing on HubPages.

So you’ll a “Maven Recommends” or similar widget from time to time… and in return, users on other channels around the coalition will be directed to you, based on topic and user interests and behavior. We’ll continue to refine that targeting - the aim ultimately is for all coalition members to benefit from increased traffic.

Thank you for being a Maven.
