Mass Exodus From Public Schooling? The Data Tell Quite A Story About Education Today
Public schools have long dominated the educational sphere, with private and charter schools being fairly infrequent opportunities granted only to a select few families throughout the country. However, the school choice renaissance is empowering families from all walks of life to take control of their children's education, and they are walking out on public schools looking for better horizons.
"With back-to-school time upon us, more than two million U.S. children will be avoiding the school bus altogether in favor of homeschooling, an educational choice that has accelerated in recent years among both liberal and conservative families. While homeschooling for religious freedom remains an important driver for many families, 2012 data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reveal that a main reason for homeschooling is 'concern about the environment of other schools.'"
Not only are legislatures passing school choice legislation, technology is also improving to enable virtual learning right at home. With video chat, students can go to class while at home (a twist on homeschooling). As of 2013, 310,000 had participated in this method of schooling, with many more having done so since I'm sure.
I don't know about you, but I'm glad to see that the states are freeing up educational options for parents and their kids. Options increases the quality of any given product, education is no exception. If we want a vibrant education system, it will be achieved by having schools compete for students with ever-increasing standards and results; not by more mandates and standardization in curricula.
