SAD: In Venezuela, Five-Years' Severance Pay Can Only Pay For One Coffee...
How's this for some perspective? While we're here in America, worried about the price of gas hitting $3 a gallon, Venezuelans are dealing with an inflation rate of 13,000%.
Yolanda Abreu received five years' severance pay after working as a cardiologist, but shockingly her check could only pay for one cup of coffee. The check for 156,584.29 bolivars was worth only about $0.20 on the black market.
"They called me from Caracas University Hospital to come and collect my check for benefits accrued over five years of service as a level 2 specialist in cardiology and electrophysiology," she wrote on Twitter.
What will it buy? "A coffee?"
If the check was cut in January 2017, it would have been worth $45.
Her original post has gotten a great deal of attention, with some people saying that they robbed her. But who's really doing the robbing here? It's the Venezuelan government that is destroying their economy though the insane rates of inflation along with price controls.
As bad as things may sometimes seem here in the U.S., I think it's important to keep things in perspective. Our struggles are nothing compared to what the Venezuelans are going through right now.
