Young Children Can No Longer Hold Pencils Correctly; Tech to Blame?
Parents and grandparents have recently noticed a strange phenomenon with young school students: they can't hold their pencils correctly.
During this time, many parents spoke out and opposed the Common Core curriculum, which was phasing out cursive writing. Many states implemented laws mandating that cursive be taught, but how can students learn it if they cannot even hold the pencil correctly?
“‘Children are not coming into school with the hand strength and dexterity they had 10 years ago,’ said Sally Payne, the head paediatric occupational therapist at the Heart of England foundation NHS Trust. ‘Children coming into school are being given a pencil but are increasingly not be[ing] able to hold it because they don’t have the fundamental movement skills."
Digital devices may be to blame for this, as it's much easier to give a child a tablet than it is to have them do activities that require mental exertion and maybe even getting dirty. But we're seeing the fruit of that approach right now. Tech experts are making known the risks of their products for young children, we would be wise to heed their advice.
