The "Editor Issues" Open Thread

lloyd

Today's release sees some important editor fixes and enhancements that I wanted to tell you about so let's get right to it.

Bug fixes and enhancements
In a previous thread I detailed some known editor issues and workarounds for you to try in the meantime. Well good news! As far as bug fixes go this release should remove all the wonkiness around block quotes, new lines, and carriage returns that you saw before and added more structure around when a renderable will be created. The new feature you might have noticed is a option for viewing and editing the raw markdown of your stories.

Here is a screen cap of some common formatting options...

...and here is the view of the underlying markdown that you can edit or use to debug.

Renderable Rules
Renderables will be created for for every link/url found in your story body. If you don't want to have your link generate a renderable edit the link and insert a "-" (hyphen) at the begining of the url and that will tell the parser to ignore it.

Any url found on a line of it's own will be removed and replaced with a renderable while links found within a paragraph will remain in-line and insert the renderable after the paragraph.

Keep us Posted
We're constantly working to improve this so please keep the feedback coming.

Thanks and happy Mavening!!!

@lloyd - not sure where to go with this until I can repeat it. Not that I want to. But when I do I will let you know. Looking forward to the editor updates. Everything is becoming more usable by the day ... all the hard work is truly appreciated!

Weird. There could've been I suppose. I didn't have a problem pasting all of it here though: https://www.themaven.net/testing/general/OjNsfEKYCkaTFm7C-z-KMw

On a good note, there are lots of editor fixes about to finally roll. I'm not gonna say which until testing signs off on them. ;-)

@lloyd - here is the link to the original article, I cut and pasted the OP text: https://www.thechocolatelife.com/community/forums/opinion/10316/what-the-chocolate-industry-needs-is-a-100-bar-of-chocolate

I wonder if there was a hidden embedded character somewhere. In the original submission, the article was truncated somewhere in the first paragraph.

@DiscoverChoc Not on purpose. Can you send me a link to the story for me to try to repro? I've tried massive stories before but not massive massive stories. It could be a limit to internal memory too as I've seen weird stuff with copy paste buffers but it would probably have to be really big.

@lloyd - is there a max char count for stories? I did a copy/paste yesterday and the text got truncated.

Some fixes released for photo upload bugs in the quick posts. Here are the fixes currently in the review phase of the pipeline:

  1. No longer clear form when clicking outside of the form
  2. Don't require photos for stories with youtube or vimeo videos
  3. Validate photos and videos prior to uploading
  4. Make creating and editing long stories easier by capping the height of the editor to the view height
  5. Underlined-Links-In-Editor-By-Default

There were some other minor things in there too but these are the highlights so far.

That may be... let me know if recurs. I know we were tinkering at exactly the same time :-)

@billso - missing another comment. Posted but progress animation never returned success. Has an embedded image. I wonder if I did it at the same time you merged the threads and it got lost?

Merged prior editor thread into this one. Re question above, links will shortly be shown underlined. Also note the trick to place a '-' in front of any URL you do not want "rendered" into an image/headline/text block.

@lloyd - I second making inline links visible by default - without needing to hover over to discover.

When rendering bulleted and numbered lists, I would like a <br> between elements of the list. This has the effect of improving the visual rhythm of the page and drawing attention to the list by further setting it off.

One issue I'll be working on next is the magic space removal that happens in certain bolded text.

Today sees another big release of editor bug fixes. Namely the editor size not resetting after cancel, quickpost losing uploaded photo links, links not displayed as links and a whole lot more. What issues are you still seeing? Where do you think thinks could be improved?

Post your comments and questions here and a maven will answer.

@lars. That's very odd. If it's still happening bubble it up to Pete and we'll get a tech to look at it.

Is the practically non-existent marking of hyperlinks within text a conscious deliberate design decision? Inserted hyperlinks are visible for users ONLY by hovering over them.
IMHO - hyperlinks are the essence of the Web. I would like to see them more pronounced.
