Making a Murderer's Jerry Buting on New Evidence, Reddit Theories, & What the Documentary Left Out
A celebration erupted in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin on September 11, 2003, as Steven Avery walked out of the prison where he had been locked up for 18 years...
Students For Liberty is excited to announce Jerry Buting, the lawyer from Making a Murderer, will be speaking at LibertyCon! Our justice system should embody integrity and trust but instead, it oftentimes presumes guilt over innocence. Buting has worked more than 35 years as a criminal defense attorney and fights to expose failures of both law enforcement and the justice system.
Known for his appearance on the Netflix hit-series Making a Murderer, Buting earned his trustworthy reputation through his display of integrity as the defense attorney in the State v. Steven Avery murder trial of 2007. He uses his newfound fame as a platform to lecture the general public on the importance of a justice system that does not condemn based on an accusation.
“We can all say we will never commit a crime, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be accused. If that happens, you’ll understand the importance of the presumption of innocence.” - Jerome Buting
In his book Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America’s Broken System (Harper, 2017), Buting analyzes our criminal justice system and proposes ways that we can make a difference and impose change.
Buting is a practicing attorney at Buting, Williams & STilling S.C. where he exclusively focuses on criminal cases. Take a look at the video to see Buting’s take on New Evidence, Reddit Theories and What the Documentary Left Out.
